5 Free Things to do, on the Gold Coast | Travel Australia

The Gold Coast has fast become my favourite spot in Australia. There is so much to see and do on the Gold Coast for free. Being that it is pretty much sunny all year round, being outside is a given and there are so many beautiful beaches to check out. But here are 5 other outdoor activities around the Gold Coast you can do for free!

Springbrook National Park.

Springbrook National Park is amazing and well worth a visit and is located 100km south of Brisbane. I only got to go once but I would have loved to have gone back and explored more. The Twin Falls circuit is a beautiful 4km walk starting from the Tallanbana picnic area. You descend through bush, with majestic views through the trees and eventually come to a lagoon with the twin waterfalls. You can swim here and I would definitely recommend it even though it is freezing!

You should also try and do the ‘Natural Bridge’ circuit, an extremely short walk to a waterfall that has eroded through into a cave below. You can view the water falling through a hole in the cave ceiling below and it is truly spectacular. You can’t swim at this one due to the bats and glow worms that inhabit the cave, but if you go at night you will get to see the glow worms in their full glory.

Point Danger.

Point Danger is one of my favourite spots. It marks the border of New South Wales and Queensland and is a headland, located at Coolangatta. It is also home to the Captain Cook memorial and lighthouse. Visit the beautiful lookout to see surfers hitting the waves below at Duranbah beach, or check out the love locks attached the fence surrounding the area. You can take a nice easy walk from the headland down to Snapper beach, where the Quicksilver and Roxy Pros are held each year.

Tally Creek / Burleigh Head National Park

Tally Creek is the ideal place to spend a day relaxing. It’s beautiful, clear and peaceful water is perfect for floating or paddle boarding.

It can get quite busy so make sure you get there early for a good spot. To the left of the creek is Burleigh Head National Park where you can do a short bush walk into the town. The look out is beautiful and you can see right along the coast, apparently you can spot humpback whales in the winter and spring!

Killarney Glen Waterfall

Situated inland off the Gold Coast, Killarney Glen is a bit of a trek, so you’ll need a car to get there.

We left from Burleigh Heads and it took us just under an hour. Head towards Beechmont Road and you will see a sign marking the 2.5km walk. Even if you don’t want to jump into the heart shaped waterfall, you can enter the water further down and just have a relaxing swim amongst the cliff walls. However I would definitely recommend doing the jump! Be careful if you jump off the main platform, to ensure you keep left to avoid the rock on your right, and brace yourself for the baltic water.

Burleigh Bongos

Every Sunday evening at Burleigh Head park, bongo players and fire throwers head down to show off their skills. Many flock here to watch the spectacle and enjoy the music. It starts around 6pm and goes for a few hours. Bring a blanket and a picnic and enjoy the show!

There is so much more to do around the Gold Coast, Mt. Warning, Lamington National Park and Currumbin Rock Pools are some more awesome places to explore. So what are you waiting for? Get down to the southern part of the Gold Coast and get adventuring!
