Killarney Glen | The Heart Shaped Waterfall

I had heard about the mysterious heart shaped waterfall through a friend. An American girl with an awe-inspiring Instagram feed. It was on her Instagram feed that I saw a photo of her jumping into a heart shaped lagoon and I had to go. I set about convincing my friends to go, which didn’t take much, and off exploring we went. Check out the video here.

Getting There.

Situated inland off the Gold Coast, Killarney Glen is a bit of a trek, so you’ll need a car to get there. We left from Burleigh Heads and it took us just under an hour. Head towards Beechmont Road and you will see a sign marking the 2.5km walk.

Once you start ealing you will find a crossroads, on you left is the slightly easier descent and the one we took. After a while you will come to a small shack, bear right and the waterfall will be on your left.

The Experience.

It was an overcast Tuesday morning when we decided to make the trip. Seven of us clambered into two cars, early morning, preparing ourselves for a cold jump. When we arrived it wasn’t too busy, around ten other people were milling around, either deciding whether to do the jump, or having already gone for it.

The boys stepped up first showing their bravery straight away and jumping from the main platform. Watching them take the plunge and gracefully swim around the lagoon, was enough to make me want to get in there. I slowly built up my courage, using my camera as my excuse.

Eventually I was the last one, so I stepped up to the edge. There is a large rock to your right, as you jump in so make sure you aim to the left. As my legs had already turned to jelly, I knew I had to go quick or risk chickening out. So I jumped.

It was awesome. It didn’t feel as high as it looked, but what I wasn’t prepared for was just how cold the water was. It was bloody baltic! Once you have gotten over the freezing water engulfing you, it is a beautiful swim downstream through the towering rocks around you.

After the jump, some of the others found other spots to jump in from and then we headed back to Burleigh for a post jump beer, feeling quite pleased with our morning adventure.

The falls is beautiful, even if you don’t jump, it is worth heading down there just to see it and swim down the stream – if you can stomach the freezing water!
